Eight confirmed for 2014 Premiere Stakes

October 1st, 2014

Just eight runners have been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse, highlighted by several standout sprinters over the 2014 Australian racing calendar so-far.

Breaking through for a maiden Group 1 victory over the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith has confirmed Famous Seamus in the final field for the 2014 Premiere Stakes.

Confirmed to target the open sprint races the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) this time in, Mayfield-Smith is confident Famous Seamus will find winning form this weekend with in-from jockey Tim Clark confirmed to take the ride.

Claiming an impressive race record of nine wins and eight minor places from his 32 competitive appearances on course so far, the Elusive City gelding finished third behind Arinosa and Dystopia in this event last year before progressing on to a strong victory in the Listed Lightning Handicap (1100m) later in October.

Finishing third in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) first-up this year, Famous Seamus was unable to figure in two proceeding Group 1 starts in Sydney, but returned to favourable form upon arriving in Queensland, particularly when charging home to win the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) when jumping as the race’s rank outsider.

Appearing to have returned to racing in competitive form this season, Joe Pride has accepted a position in the final field of the Premiere Stakes for Rain Affair.

A standout performer over both the 2012 and 2014 Autumn Carnival’s Rain Affair was touted as one to watch upon resuming in autumn this year, but was unable to live up to the hype in finishing last in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) first-up, ninth in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 25th and 10th in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).

Offered a good chance of returning to the winner’s circle from barrier 5, Rain Affair has been confirmed to be partnered by in-form jockey Blake Shinn in the 2014 Premiere Stakes.

The standout performer of the few black type sprint events over winter in Sydney, trainer John O’Shea has confirmed Generalife will return to racing in the Premiere Stakes this weekend.

Claiming eight wins and four minor places from just 21 starts so far, Generalife quickly built to the task over minor sprints in autumn; hitting peak condition when claiming back-to-back wins in the Gaypak United Fruit 3.y.o+ (1350m), Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) and Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) most recently on July 19th.

Arguably the biggest winner of all leading chances at Wednesday’s Premiere Stakes barrier draw, Generalife will leave from the ideal barrier 4 with Sydney Premiership winning jockey James McDonald on board.

Having not been seen on course in a year, trainer Stephen Farley has confirmed Sincero for a racing return in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes.

A multiple Group 1 winner having taken out both the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) and George Main Stakes (1500m) in seasons gone by, Sincero’s class is sure to count for a lot in the 2014 Premiere Stakes, but may find it difficult to figure amongst a talent-filled field first-up.
