2015 Premiere Stakes for First-up Terravista

June 23rd, 2015

Trainer Joe Pride has revealed standout sprinter Terravista has this week returned to work ahead of a 2015 Spring Carnival campaign that may begin in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on October 3rd.

Terravista was a standout performer for Pride through the 2014 edition of the Spring Carnival, and ended his campaign with an impressive performance for success in the talent-rich Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington on November 8th.

Conceding the Captain Rio gelding was not at his best over a three start autumn preparation despite finishing in the minors in two Group 1 features, Pride is confident Terravista is in line for a career-best preparation this time.

“He only just came back into work yesterday, so had a good two month break,” Pride told Racing Ahead.

“As these good horses do he’d rolled from Carnival to Carnival for a couple of seasons and I think it eventually takes its toll.

“We saw last preparation he clearly wasn’t at his best but still managed to have three runs for a couple of Group 1 placings but wasn’t where he should be.

“He’s put on a stack of weight and looks magnificent. He’s lightly raced so there’s good reason to think we haven’t seen the best of him yet.”

Pride is yet to settle on a specific path for Terravista through the Spring Racing Carnival, but revealed the Group 2 Premiere Stakes may figure as his first point of call ahead of progression to the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) and defence of his Darley Classic crown.

“There’s no rush at all, I just wanted to get him ready for a couple of races here in Sydney possibly The Shorts and the premiere or one of the other of those two races,” Pride said.

“Then we’ll probably run him similar to last year – the race at the Valley (Manikato Stakes) and then down the straight again (Darley Classic).

“Hong Kong’s a possibility this year. It’s definitely an option for this horse if he’s performing at his best.

“He’s just a top-class sprinter and certainly the best horse I’ve ever put a saddle on.”
