2015 Premiere Stakes an Option for Kencella

July 20th, 2015

Veteran sprinter Kencella has been transferred to the care of Joe Pride for his campaign through the 2015 Spring Carnival, and the Warwick Farm-based trainer is confident he can help the horse progress into a series black type performance once more.

Kencella began his racing career under the guidance of now-Godolphin head trainer John O’Shea; transferring to the care of leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller prior to his 2014 Spring Carnival campaign, which also included two failed autumn starts this time.

Pride has been thrilled with the performances mustered by the Exceed And Excel gelding in a pair of Warwick Farm barrier trials in recent weeks and looks likely to target a race like the 2015 Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on October 3rd.

“I know he won barrier trials with Chris as well, but I do think he’s going well and I’m pleased with him,” Pride told The Daily Telegraph.

“I think I’ve found the right sort of race for him to resume in. He’s not a particularly big horse but he’s obviously very quick.

“I’ve trained him like all my other sprinters. They swim twice a day, I try to get them to switch off and relax as much as they can and you want them to go fast but not hard.

“Both trials he has looked reasonably relaxed.”

A strong and consistent performer for O’Shea through the 2013/14 summer and autumn, Kencella won each of his first two starts; running second to Inside Job in Become An ATC Sponsor BM75 (1100m) before again taking out his next three starts, including the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m).

Having only managed mid-pack finishes for Waller through spring, the gelding out of Kentaria placed fifth in a Rosehill Gardens minor over 1100m upon resuming this year; returning to the paddock after failing to beat a single runner home in the Maurice McCarten Stakes.
